KARKKIDAKAMKarkidaka chikitsa is a tradition that has been in practice since several centuries, in kerala. It’s a fabulous healing strategy to exploit times of physical, mental and spiritual challenge, to achieve healing and prolonged well being. Dakshinayana is the southern transit of Sun and nights are longer during this period. Dakshinayana begins on July 16 of every year. In Kerala, the month, Karkkidakam marks the beginning of Dakshinayana. There are two Pakshas (fortnight) in every month. Six months constitute an ‘ayana’. And two ‘ayanas’ a year. There are 12 months in every year. The names of two ayanas are Utharayana and Dakshinayana. In Kerala, every Hindu family does recite Athyathma Ramayanam Kilippattu. Most of the hindu families are reciting Ramayanam at the time of sunset in order to invite Lakshmi Devi to every home to eradicate poverty. The incessant rain during the month of Karkkidaka brings out many discomforts in the form of ailments, scarcity, dearth, destructions…etc. During this month the agrarian population of Kerala receives a retarded production in crops and other rural food products.
KARKKIDAKA KANJIIn this season Karkkidakam (Monsoon) is affected with so many diseases and sufferings. The total environmental areas like working places, houses, cattle sheds…etc should be kept as clean and water logging in this areas should be avoided as far as possible to avoid mosquito menase and insects. Because of down pouring rain lot of chances are there to spread viral fever like diseases due to uncleanliness of surroundings. Hence many of the families used to keep their surroundings clean and tide. Due to the incessant rain, many of the farmers will not be having routine work and this is a period of rejuvinating their body while taking Karkkidaka kanji. Even in Temples also giving Rejuvinating treatment for Elephants during this period. Karkkidaka Kanji is a traditional Ayurvedic medicinal mix which is used as a medicine for body purification since many centuries. The ingredients of Karkkidaka Kanji are boiled Navara ari (rice), Uluva, Jeerakam, Thiruthalli, Uzhinnigi,Bala,Attibala,Chathurjatham,Jathikka,Gathipathari,Danakam,Kalasam,Assalli,Satkuppa,Manjal ,Kakkankaya, etc.The ingredients are boiled using coconut milk or cow milk along with coconut jagarry and pinch of salt .The Karkkidaka Kanji can be consumed during early mornings or in dusk timings.
